Teaching has become an extremely high-stress profession, especially over the past 15 years. There is ample research that proves that teacher stress, anxiety, burnout, and job dissatisfaction are at an all-time high, thanks to various factors like increased pressure, unreasonable demands from parents and the system, technology and the new student-teacher-parent dynamics. All this makes the much-neglected facet of mental fitness for teachers, an issue of critical importance, one that all schools need to address on an immediate basis.
This interactive workshop was for nearly 200 of the academic faculty members of the Good Shepard International School, Ooty. The focus was on stress management for teachers, cultivating emotional hygiene, improving mental fitness, incorporating mindfulness in daily life, and applying it in the classroom.
These workshops can be done in a condensed session of 2 hours, or expanded across a 6 hour session. The focus is hugely on creating rapport, trust, interaction and understanding of various techniques by actual practice and engagement.
Some of the highlights are understanding what stress really is, the impact it has on us and how we can better manage it, through simple and effective stress management techniques. Participating faculty are introduced to the concept of Emotional Hygiene and how they can practice it. The final module introduces mindfulness, how it is especially useful for teachers, and how it can be implemented in class and blended into the daily school routine.
